Upper Mustang Enduro Biking
Upper Mustang Enduro Biking | 11-Day 4×4 Supported MTB Tour
The Kingdom of Enduro
Venture into the “Forbidden Kingdom” of Upper Mustang, a high-altitude desert that feels more like the Tibetan Plateau than the lush valleys of Nepal. This 11-day journey is designed for the modern rider who wants to maximize “gravity miles” while minimizing the grind of dusty jeep roads. Supported by a 4×4 shuttle, you will be whisked to the summits of high passes like Gyu La (4,077m) and Chogo La (4,230m) before dropping into technical, ancient nomadic trails and “Grand Canyon” style sandy descents. The journey concludes with an epic ride through the world’s deepest gorge to the village of Kalopani, offering a stark contrast of terrain and a final, high-speed forest blast.
Highlights for the Jomsom to Kalopani Leg:
-
The Marpha “Apple Run”: A flat, fast-rolling section through cobblestone streets famous for apple brandy and local pies.
-
Dhaulagiri Icefall Views: As you reach Kalopani, you are positioned directly between two 8,000m giants—Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri—providing arguably the best mountain views of the entire trip.
-
Mixed Terrain: Expect a combination of wide, dry riverbeds, alpine pine forest trails, and occasional technical “chunky” rock sections.
-
Climate Shift: You will notice a dramatic change as you drop in elevation, moving from the treeless rain shadow into “vibrant forests” and greener landscapes.
- Highlight: This day is often a favourite for riders because oxygen levels increase as you descend, making the riding feel significantly more powerful and “fun” than in the thin air of the previous days in Lo Manthang.
Why This Format Works:
-
Gravity Focus: By using the truck for the steep, dusty jeep road sections, the “Distance” reflects quality trail time rather than exhausting road grinds.
-
Acclimatization: The itinerary builds elevation gradually, using Day 2 and 3 as safety buffers before hitting the 4,000m+ passes.
-
Cultural Depth: Time saved by shuttling allows riders to spend more daylight hours exploring the Luri Gompa, the Sky Caves, and the Lo Manthang palace.
